How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular in Killeen. There are a variety of charging options available so you don’t have to solely rely on one method. But, each method has a different charging rate. At Don Ringler Chevrolet, we are often asked “How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?” and we have answers for you! Of course, it will depend on the type of vehicle you have as well as it’s make and model. Here, we’ll discuss how long it takes to charge an electric vehicle depending on the type of charging options available. Read below for more!

Electric Car Charging Options

As mentioned before, there are a variety of options when it comes to charging your electric vehicle. Because of this, there are different electric car times. Here are the top three charging types that you’ll likely find in Salado and details about them:

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A normal, three-prong 110V/120V charging outlet is considered Level 1 Charging. It doesn’t provide lightning fast charging, but it’s a great way to top off a charge in the evenings after work. In general, Level 1 charging takes around 24hrs to fully charge an EV. If you solely rely on this type of charging, make sure to have free days for charging.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: This type of charging is considered Level 2 Charging. Using 240+V chargers provides a faster charge, taking only a few hours for your EV to reach a full charge rather than at least an entire day. On average, you can receive up to 80% of full charge in less than an hour. But after that, the charge starts to slow down.
  3. Public Charging: This type of charging is generally available at grocery stores, malls, hotels and apartment complexes. As EVs become more popular, public charging availability will increase as well. Although these charging stations have varying charging speed, they typically provide Level 2 charging capabilities. It’s convenient to get a quick charge while at the grocery store to make sure you always have enough charge.

Typical Domestic Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Domestic car charging times can change depending on what level it is. Additional details are below:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging often takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. You can often get between 60-200 miles of range in just 20-30 minutes with Level 2 DC charging, though. For this reason, most people intermix daytime “top-off” charging with overnight charging.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles typically require less charging time. It will likely take 1-4 hours to reach full charge since electricity is not the only energy source for these vehicles. Often, they use electric range fully for a small amount of time or under certain speeds, then switch over to gasoline power.

Typical Public Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Most home chargers offer 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging. Public stations, on the other hand, offer much more wattage: 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging. As a result, for some applicable vehicles, you could foreseeably get a full charge (0-100%) in an hour or so. In other cases it could take 4 hours, 6 hours, or 11 hours for a full charge.
