Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV on Street

Do Electric cars need oil? No, they don’t. When you purchase an electric car in Temple, you won’t have the same maintenance issues as driving a gas-powered car. Unlike hybrid vehicles, fully electric cars don’t contain a conventional combustion engine. That means you don’t ever have to worry about getting an electric car oil change! Still, plug-in hybrid vehicles do have an internal combustion engine, so their maintenance plans are similar to traditional vehicles. While you don’t need to get an electric car oil change, there are other maintenance issues you need to take care of in an EV. Learn more below, and contact us at Don Ringler Chevrolet with questions or to schedule service.

Do Electric Cars Need Oil or Lubricants?

Even though electric cars don’t use oil, they have an electric motor and gearbox that require regular maintenance. The service team at Don Ringler Chevrolet recommends that you schedule EV service at least once a year. But if you drive more than 14,000 miles per year around Killeen or beyond, you should schedule a service appointment every six months.

Electric Vehicle Service Schedule

Now that you know the answer to the question, “Do electric cars use oil?” what other services do EVs need? The EV market is expanding in Salado, and more auto manufacturers offer electric vehicles than ever before. That means that not all EV manufacturers have the same maintenance requirements. It’s best to check your owner’s manual for your make and model’s specific recommended maintenance schedule. But this is a general guideline:

  • 7,500 miles: Inspect all fluids and rotate the tires.
  • 15,000 miles: Replace your wiper blades.
  • 36,000 miles: Replace the cabin air filter.
  • 75,000 miles: Replace hood gas struts.
  • Every five years: Fill fluids and replace the brake fluid.
  • Every seven years: Change air conditioning desiccant.

You should also keep an eye on your EV battery warranty. Some automakers provide up to 8-10 years of limited-mile warranties, but it’s best to address any issues immediately as EV batteries are expensive.
